Web Design
The first stage to developing a website is the design. Normally I will produce 2 or 3 rough designs to help give you a better idea about how the final design will look. Once you have chosen a design layout I will develop the design fully keeping you informed of any ideas or graphics I add to the design.
The design of a website is arguably the most important factor to its success. Website navigation must be clear and easy to use, a site musn't be too cluttered or contain too many images or graphics which can slow the time it takes the page to load.
Another factor to consider when designing your site is Search Engine Optimisation the structure of the html used and the content on the site can help improve your search engine ranking. We would discuss which search terms you would like your site to be geared towards.
Accessibilty
Website accessibility is a factor many web designers choose to ignore when designing a website. Many sites are not accessible to blind or disabled users. The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) does refer to websites in its code of practice.
2.2 (p7): “The Disability Discrimination Act makes it unlawful for a service provider to discriminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide any service which it provides to members of the public.”
2.13 - 2.17 (p11-13): “What services are affected by the Disability Discrimination Act? An airline company provides a flight reservation and booking service to the public on its website. This is a provision of a service and is subject to the act.”
All my sites are built using styles sheets which control the fonts and layout of a site, which help in making a site more accessible to disabled users.
Web Development
Depending on your site requirements you may need to store data such as product information or customer information which will require the use of a database and programming.
Proramming functions are added to the pages in the site which will connect to the database and make the site work, displaying data from the database to the user and storing data entered by the user into the database.
eCommerce
If you require the ability to sell products online your site will require a database and programming discussed above aswell as a way to accept payment using services such as PayPal, Protx or WorldPay
eCommerce sites must have an easy to use design making the customer shopping experience as hassle free as possible, increasing your profits!
When storing sensitive customer information, data must be secured as per the Data Protection Act.
Hosting, Domain Name Registration, eMail
When your site is designed and built you need a place to store or 'host' the site. And an address or 'domain name' so users can find the site e.g 'www.mayohdesign.co.uk'.
I am able to offer both of these services at a monthly charge which will vary depending on the size of the site. Hosting is very cheap and starts from as little as £5 a month.
When choosing your domain name you should go for a short memorable name that is relevent to your business or organisation. Normally a .co.uk domin name is around £5 a year.
